Getting stronger is simple in principle: give your body a stimulus it isn't used to, and it adapts to become stronger — that's "progressive overload." Muscles don't grow because you "did the exercise"; they adapt and get stronger and bigger because you give them a gradually increasing stimulus they have to respond to.
"Progression" in training usually means several options — not just piling on weight:
None of these is "always best" — the key is to regularly increase one of them. Randomly adding weight without a system invites injury; holding the same load forever never produces progress.

Finding: over time, the progressive group shows clearly greater gains in both strength and muscle size. Research identifies progressive overload as the core driver of muscular adaptation — without a gradually increasing stimulus, training merely maintains the status quo rather than making you stronger (Schoenfeld et al., 2017). The principle is simple: your body is efficient — there's no reason to spend energy getting stronger to handle a stimulus it already copes with.
